First day away

Jake got on the bus for Ft. Riley, KS on Monday. They were loaded up with 300 lbs. of gear each, including their weapons, their body armor, 9 MREs and 12 quarts of water. Crazy. There wasn't enough room in Jake's luggage for all that food, so he picked and chose what he liked. We took the rest home to share with the kids we know.

The plane was scheduled to leave at 1:45 p.m. on the 11th. According to Mandy, they arrived in Ireland at 11:30 p.m. Mandy called me this morning to let me know that Jake had called. He wanted to make sure she knew he was safely across the ocean. She said that was hardest, knowing he's so far away, now. It's finally starting to hit her.

She said he said he was frustrated because the pay phone in the airport wouldn't accept his calling card, so he had to use his credit card. Oh, I hope frustration is not part of his life from here on out.

He's supposed to arrive in Kuwait around 10:00 a.m. our time.

I have plans to get a clock to keep on Iraq time. It's important.
